Based on the theater play by Ödön von Horváth, the film tells of the fate of a young woman named Marianne, who breaks off her reluctant engagement with Oskar the butcher after falling in love with the shady gambler Alfred. They become a couple and have a baby, but he gets bored and leaves them. Without means to support herself, her downfall begins.

This screening is presented as part of the Fall/Winter 2024 Filmbar Series, “This is Vienna.” The series explores the city that both inspired and defined the artistic journey of Egon Schiele, and is organized in conjunction with the special exhibition, “Egon Schiele: Living Landscapes.”
