The Austrian architect Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956) is recognized as one of the leading figures in the modern movement. This catalog takes as its point of departure four rooms designed during his most creative period, the years between 1902 and 1913.

Covering such diverse topics as interior design, literature, fashion, and psychoanalysis, the catalog examines the social and artistic developments occurring in Vienna during this period. An analysis of the design scene in Germany at the time helps establish a contrasting vision to Hoffmann’s own sensibility. Finally, Hoffmann’s private dwellings are revealed in photographs shown for the first time.
