One and One Is Four: The Bauhaus Photocollages of Josef Albers

Edited by Hans-Michael Koetzle Aenne Biermann (1898–1933) is regarded as one of the most important avant-garde photographers of the twentieth century. Together with Bauhaus artists such as Lucia Moholy and Florence Henri, she was represented in the pioneering exhibitions of the late 1920s and early 1930s. Then, in 1930, art critic and Biermann’s early patron Franz Roh dedicated to her a legendary monograph designed by Jan Tschichold, Aenne Biermann. 60 Photos. Aenne Biermann: 60 photos

By Pavel Scheufler Apart from being a co-owner of the tannery in the town of Krucemburk in the Bohemian-Moravian Uplands, Josef Binko (1879–1960) is an extraordinary figure in the history of photography in the Bohemian Lands. He is the only Czech photographer to be continuously represented (by his darkroom) in the permanent exhibition on the history of photographic technology at the National Technical Museum, Prague. He is the only amateur photographer with several thousand negatives in the Museum of Decorative Arts, Prague, which owns the most important collection of Czech photographs. Apart from František Drtikol he is the only Czech photographer with several hundred brome oil and gum bichromate prints preserved from the period before the First World War. The life of Binko, who was until now a largely forgotten figure in the history of Czech photography, is in many ways a reflection of the fate of his country. Josef Sudek (Fototorst)

By Jan Rezác Although the Czech photographer Josef Sudek was mildly reclusive by temperament, and although his photography is commonly characterized as unpeopled (in favor of what he termed "the inanimate life of objects"), a sizable portion of his oeuvre is given over to portraits. In fact, the beginnings of Sudek's work are in portraiture, in his images of fellow patients at the veteran's hospital where he spent three years after the First World War. (It was here that Sudek's right arm was amputated after a battlefield injury, a misfortune which did not prevent him from using heavy, large-format cameras in the future.) Decades later, after he had cofounded the Czech Photographic Society in 1924 and established his signature neo-Romantic preoccupation with architectural Prague, he returned to the genre. The work neither provides a tidy critique of the extant aristocracy, nor does it blithely venerate the decor, saying “ooooh,” while rolling the brocade curtains between its fingers. Instead, it simply shows and tells, through the disembodied perspective of familial subjectivity. It interrogates history but receives only demure shrugs in response. The heart of the project lies in the darkly comedic stories told over dinner by Hely-Hutchinson’s domineeringly charismatic (or is it charismatically domineering?) grandmother, an Austro-Hungarian countess, who ran away with her family’s English foreign exchange student (later known as Grandpa Hugh) at age 16, and now lives a life of ease in the French Riviera, captured with great sensitivity in Hely-Hutchinson’s documentary Vacances. Hely-Hutchinson set out to Austria, with her Grandmother’s name to unlock some portcullises, and get a seat at the dinner table. Like the stories themselves, Hely-Hutchinson’s photographs are often unresolved, sometimes riddles, sometimes poems. Is a bat loose in the house a symbol? A nod to the old expression of eccentricity, “bats in the belfry?” A visual representation of the outside world intruding upon a fortified space?
