Neue Galerie Manhattan Diary 2025

By Andrew S. Dolkart Neue Galerie New York opened in 2001 in a distinguished home: a 1913 Beaux-Arts mansion designed by Carrère and Hastings, one of the preeminent architectural firms of its era. The house was commissioned by William Starr and Edith Warren Miller, both members of old and established American families. It was later occupied by Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt III. The mansion was purchased in 1994 by Serge Sabarsky and Ronald Lauder, with the intention of turning it into a museum for German and Austrian art. Architect Annabelle Selldorf was given the considerable task of transforming the building into a modern museum. Egon Schiele usually carried a small sketchbook with him, jotting down his compositional ideas and other personal notions on the go. This facsimile edition provides unusual insight into the artist's mind and working methods. Twenty-two of these small scale sketchbooks are known to have survived. Wiener Werkstätte Kinder Notecard Set

Basilius Besler (1561–1629) was a respected Nuremberg apothecary and botanist. He was curator of the garden of Johann Konrad von Gemmingen, prince bishop of Eichstätt in Bavaria. The renaissance-style garden was the first botanical garden in Germany, and the only outside of Italy at the time. Besler is best known for his monumental Hortus Eystettensis (Garden of Eichstätt), the earliest pictorial record of a specific garden and the oldest of all of the great botanicals. Over 1,000 varieties of flowers are depicted in 367 exquisitely engraved and colored plates, setting the standard for the great botanical folios of the following centuries. German artists Franz Marc (1880-1916) and August Macke (1887-1914) met in January 1910, when they were twenty-nine and twenty-three years old, respectively. At that time, they had already traveled to France, were familiar with French art, and admired the work of artist Paul Cezanne. Marc and Macke enjoyed a close artistic and personal friendship that had a profound impact on their work during the five years that they knew each other. They often visited each other's studios, engaged in an extensive correspondence, responded to each other's paintings, and exhibited their work side by side on numerous occasions. The decorative motifs employed on this card set are drawn from one of Gustav Klimt’s most famous works—the mosaic frieze that was installed in the dining room of the Palais Stoclet in Brussels. This building was the crowning achievement of Josef Hoffmann and the Wiener Werkstätte, and the collaboration with Hoffmann marked a turning point in Klimt’s career. One of the most prominent elements of the Stoclet frieze was the so-called “Tree of Life”—a reference to a utopian garden paradise untouched by death and disease. Klimt frequently included spirals and other geometric elements in his work. He also favored highly stylized elements of nature frequently interspersed with the “all-seeing eye,” demonstrating his careful study of ancient art and his skillful ability to employ centuries-old motifs in new guises for an entirely modern interpretation. By Hans Haider and Diana Stoll Serge Sabarsky (1912-1996) had a colorful life. Born in Vienna, he worked as a clown and set designer for Simplicissimus, the leading cabaret of the era. He fled his native city in 1938 and settled in New York, where he worked successfully as a contractor before establishing a gallery for Austrian and German Expressionist art. With his friend Ronald Lauder, he established the Neue Galerie. Although Sabarsky died before the museum came to fruition, his passion, expertise, and generosity have informed every aspect of the institution.
