German artists Franz Marc (1880-1916) and August Macke (1887-1914) met in January 1910, when they were twenty-nine and twenty-three years old, respectively. At that time, they had already traveled to France, were familiar with French art, and admired the work of artist Paul Cezanne. Marc and Macke enjoyed a close artistic and personal friendship that had a profound impact on their work during the five years that they knew each other. They often visited each other's studios, engaged in an extensive correspondence, responded to each other's paintings, and exhibited their work side by side on numerous occasions. Both Marc and Macke died in combat during World War I.
