Visitor Policies

By visiting Neue Galerie New York, you agree to abide by our policies, and the museum reserves the right to ask visitors who do not follow these guidelines to leave the premises. We regularly amend our visitor guidelines and regulations to ensure that we are providing a safe environment for all. The Neue Galerie reserves the right to amend its policies, and will communicate updates here.

The Neue Galerie has a zero-tolerance policy for verbal or physical harassment, discriminatory or threatening behavior, or interference with the experience of others. We reserve the right to require that any person acting in an unacceptable or inappropriate manner leave the premises.

Upon arrival, all guests will be screened by security to enter the building. All bags are subject to inspection.

Each guest is permitted to enter with one bag, which measures no larger than 13″ x 17″ x 4″. Visitors are not permitted to enter the building with weapons of any kind.

At the discretion of Neue Galerie personnel, guests may be requested to stow belongings at the complimentary coat check before entering the galleries. The museum offers a complimentary coat check service, which is located on the lobby level. While no liquids are permitted in the galleries, plastic water bottles or personal bottles (empty) may be held at the coat check. The maximum size bag that will be stowed at coat check is 21”x 16”x 10”.

The following items are not allowed in the galleries:

  • Bags with dimensions larger than 13″ x 17″ x 4″. This includes luggage, larger backpacks, shopping bags, and larger purses
  • Large umbrellas
  • Strollers
  • Liquids
  • Weapons
  • Wrapped packages (gifts)

While in the galleries, all guests are required to keep bags sealed, with all personal belongings stowed. Umbrellas, food, liquid hand sanitizer, and other items may not be removed from your bag. Hand sanitizer stations are available for your convenience throughout the building.

For your safety and for the safety of the art and objects on view, please do not touch the artwork, frames, bases, or the cases.

For the safety of all, please follow the instructions of the Neue Galerie's security team. Please note that the Neue Galerie reserves the right to ask visitors who do not follow the instructions of staff and security to leave the premises.

Please stay home if you are feeling unwell.

Please do not visit the Neue Galerie if you have a fever or any COVID-19 symptoms. The Neue Galerie will not be checking vaccination status of patrons during regular museum hours. An inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19 exists in any public space where people are present. We cannot guarantee that you will not be exposed to COVID-19 during your visit to the Neue Galerie. Those visiting the museum do so at their own risk of such exposure. For more information about COVID-19, check the CDC website.

Children under the age of 12 years old are not admitted to the galleries during regular museum hours, and those aged 12 to 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Infants may be brought into the galleries, provided they are in a carrier or sling on the front of an adult.

Personal photography is only permitted on the ground floor and lower level of the building. Photography is not permitted in the galleries.

Talking on your cell phone is not permitted in the galleries or in the museum’s lobby.

A free English-language audio tour app is available to download on your smartphone.

Please bring your own headphones in order to tour the galleries with the app.

Printed copies of the audio tour script are available in standard and large print at the Admissions Desk upon request.
