Neue Galerie New York continues to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the founding of the museum throughout this year, capping off the festivities with the opening of “The Ronald S. Lauder Collection: Selections of Greek and Roman Antiquities, Medieval Art, Arms and Armor, Italian Gold-Ground and Old Master Paintings, Austrian and German Art and Design” on November 11, 2022. This exhibition, which will remain on view through February 13, 2023, presents selections from the collection of the Neue Galerie’s co-founder and President, Ronald S. Lauder. Around five hundred works – many of which will be on view to the public for the first time – will be presented across two floors of the museum.
Only on one other occasion, in honor of the museum’s tenth anniversary in 2011, did the Neue Galerie present an exhibition showcasing the broader scope of Lauder’s eclectic taste by presenting artworks that ranged from the third century BCE to the twentieth century. Now, at the conclusion of the Neue Galerie’s twentieth anniversary year, the museum is presenting additional areas of the Lauder collection, such as Greek and Roman sculpture, Italian thirteenth and fourteenth century gold-ground paintings, and objects for a Kunstkammer. With a focus on important additions to the core collection, as well as opening of new areas of inquiry, the exhibition conveys the collector’s commitment to excellence across the spectrum of art.
The principle that defines Lauder’s connoisseurship is an absolute dedication to art of superb beauty, quality, and rarity. This exhibition provides a unique insight into one of the finest private collections in the world, and introduces visitors to the mindset of a passionate lifelong art lover.
As described by Lauder:
In celebration of our twentieth anniversary, we are offering something that has rarely been done before. Many of the pieces appear just as they do in the settings I have created in my home. This not only gives the visitor an unusual opportunity to see some of the pieces in my collection, but it also offers a glimpse into my world. I decided to show these new pieces with the same furniture from the rooms of my home where they are normally displayed. I wanted to share with you the full experience that I have with my collection. In essence, I am opening my private world for the public to see so it can understand the world of the private collector. I believe it also gives me a chance to explain why I became an art collector, why I acquired the pieces I have, and why I now want to share this with you.
While the Neue Galerie focuses on Austrian and German art and culture of the early twentieth century, Lauder’s personal holdings encompass a broad range of masterworks. This exhibition and the related publication, both titled “The Ronald S. Lauder Collection,” illuminate the breadth and diversity of his collection, featuring work from various centuries and created in an array of media, from Greek and Roman antiquities to modern paintings and design objects from Austria and Germany.
The Neue Galerie was established to share one of Lauder’s passions: Austrian and German art of the early twentieth century. Since the museum’s opening on November 11, 2001, nearly 50 exhibitions, most accompanied by a scholarly publication, have explored the complex history of this period, concentrating on various developments that emerged during that era: Vienna 1900, Expressionism, Dada, the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity), and the Bauhaus.
